Students are required to take four years of English. The English Department has an established curriculum for each course which teaches effective communication and problem-solving skills and which promotes an appreciation for literature and life long learning. Each curriculum is divided into specific units of study that discuss enduring understandings, teach knowledge and skills, and offer performance assessments which promote an authentic application of skills. For each required course, three levels of study are offered: honors, college preparatory and general. In grade twelve, the department offers an advanced placement Language and Composition course. Journalism and a Writing Workshop are additional electives.

  • Honors Level: The honor’s level course provides an in-depth study of language, literature and writing. The expectations and pace are rigorous. Students interpret a variety of literary genres, write analyses and evaluations, and create original works. Students are required to complete all work and independent reading to keep pace with the class. This level will benefit students who wish to study any humanities or English course at the post-secondary level.

  • College Preparatory Level: The college preparatory level provides a comprehensive study of language, literature and writing, including all literary genres. Students read and interpret literary works, write analytical and evaluative responses, and create original works. Regular class participation is expected. This level is important for any student who wishes to attend a four year college.

  • General Level: The general level course teaches the essential knowledge and skills associated with literature, language and writing. Students read a variety of literary works and are guided to interpret and analyze the works. Original work is encouraged. Real-world applications of language and writing skills are an important component of the course. Regular attendance is essential so students may benefit from discussion and teacher guided analysis. This level is important for the student who needs to master the fundamentals of the course.
