Students are required to take three years of Mathematics. The Math Department has established curricula which focus on concepts, problem-solving and authentic application of math and reasoning skills. Courses are offered at the honors, college preparatory and general levels, and, in grade twelve, calculus is available at the advanced placement level. Several mathematic electives are offered to afford students the opportunity to advance their skills. The study of mathematics is essential for success in high school science courses and post-secondary education for any area that involves math, science, technology or business. Honors Level: The honor’s level provides a rigorous pace and requires students to engage in complex problem-solving. Students are expected to practice the problem-solving process consistently and challenge themselves to move at an accelerated pace. This level of study benefits the student who wishes to study math or sciences at the post-secondary level. College Preparatory Level: The college preparatory level expects students to perform at a consistent pace and provides a comprehensive study of course concepts. Students are guided to solve increasingly complex problems. This level is important for the student who wishes to attend a four year college. General Level: The general (basic) level focuses on fundamental knowledge and skills and moves at an appropriate pace for students to practice and master these skills. Students are guided to solve problems and see real-world applications of concepts and skills. It is essential that students attend classes on a regular basis to benefit from guided instruction.
