The study of a world language involves the study of culture as well as language and benefits students in all of their interactions. It is recommended that students who wish to attend a four year college take three years of the same world language. The World Language Department offers French, Italian and Spanish at the honors and college preparatory levels. The department also offers Advanced Placement Spanish in grade twelve. The World Language Department has an established curriculum for each course which focuses on enduring understandings, knowledge and skills and which offers continual application of language skills. The study of a world language encourages students to open themselves to new perspectives, develop an appreciation for lifelong learning and work cooperatively with a variety of people.
-
Honors Level: The honor’s level provides an in-depth study of the target language and its associated cultures. The expectations and pace are rigorous. In Spanish, French and Italian IV and V, teachers and students speak primarily in the target language and read literary works in the target language. Regular participation in conversation is essential to course success. The pace is designed to meet the needs and interests of the linguistically talented student who seeks the opportunity to progress at a rapid rate.
-
College Preparatory Level: The college preparatory course provides a comprehensive study of the target language and associated cultures. Students study the spoken and written language, focusing on vocabulary development, grammar and writing. Regular class participation and conversation is expected. As student progress in the language, increased conversation and reading will be expected in the target language.
